The present North West Branch of the CAA Retired Staff Association was formed in November 1989 after an earlier attempt to set up one had failed. After a few years of treading water, a new committee was elected in 1995 and membership has gradually risen to over 350. Whilst we are officially named the North West Branch, a number of our members who used to work in this area now live in either North Wales, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Derbyshire, Shropshire and even as far away as Wiltshire.
We hold a number of social functions throughout the year. These have included canal trips, bowling both crown and indoor, theatre visits, backstage at the Bridgewater Hall, The Lowry and the Imperial War Museum North and of course the popular Christmas Lunch. Husbands, wives and partners are always welcome to come along to these events.
The present committee comprises a cross section of former controllers, engineers, assistants and admin staff. The secretary Barry Pratt is also a member of the Central Committee.

Picture to follow at as soon as available.
My report this year begins by welcoming all our new members to the branch. Our membership total is now almost 500, though the committee would still like to see more of you attend our social functions, where you would be made very welcome. Details of the proposed 2012 programme can be found in Contrail and on the website
Sadly I have to report the death of Bernie Hanley, an ex-ATCO, during the past year. He was a loyal member of the RSA and was well known to many of our older members.
Grants from the CAA and NATS to the RSA have now ceased and the membership subscription of £1 per month deducted from pension commenced on the 1st April 2011. The response from members has generally been positive, though the aim must be for everyone to be willing to subscribe. One of the main objectives of the Central Committee over the last few months has been the retention of the RPI for our yearly increase in pension, as opposed to the introduction of the CPI, which is usually a lower figure. We are hopeful of a successful outcome to these discussions.
The branch AGM will take place once again at The Waggon & Horses in Handforth on Wednesday 21st March at 1.30 p.m. Lunch is available in the pub prior to the meeting, for those who wish it. If anyone has a motion for the National AGM, which will be held at CAA House on Saturday, 28th April, would they please let me have it, either by post or e-mail, kenpratt "at" tiscali "dot" co "dot" uk , by the 14th March.
A tour of the Lowry Theatre has been booked for Thursday, 24th May commencing at noon at a cost of £5 per head. Would members who wish to go please contact me by any means. The Bowling Day at Poynton has been arranged for Wednesday, 25th July, and Alan Walker will as usual be making the arrangements. My thanks to Alan and also Brian for the organising of the Christmas Lunch which will, this year, be on the 6th December.
Barry Pratt
Secretary

Many of the retired ATC staff who served in the North West will have fond memories of the radar unit based at Antrobus, in Cheshire (just south of Warrington down the A49!) The attached article has been provided by Donald C. MacGregor, R.N.AS Stretton and is published with his consent. Click nw_mcrnorthern_radar_antrobus.pdf.
