Obituary for Eric Prince provided by his friend Roger Dale

I am very sorry to have to tell you all that our dear friend and colleague Eric Prince died on Sunday the 31st of August after an illness that started earlier this year.

Eric started work at TEE in the 1960s as a Radio Technician after transferring from an MOD department in Wiltshire where he worked on tank radio communication systems. In those days jobs in other parts of the Civil Service were advertised throughout the Civil Service and anyone could apply for a transfer. Following a successful interview they could carry over all their pension and service credits to their new post. This system was quite successful in that it transferred experience and skills from one area of Government work to another.

Eric’s first job at TEE was in the Radio Workshops where he spent a few years assembling equipment for use in a number of different systems for installation at locations all over the country. During this time he attended Crawley College on day release where he was awarded an HNC.

He then moved to one of the Radar Labs where he worked on Closed Circuit Television and other equipments that were used at our Control Centres.

His last job before he took early retirement in 1996 was as a Project Engineer in the Installation Group specialising in Radar Data Transmission Systems. Here, he led the way in developing the first Fibre Optic systems to be installed in the Civil Aviation Authority; systems which are now very common.

Eric had many interests; he was a keen golfer and in later years developed a very active interest in bowls and wood turning. I have seen some of the items that he turned on his lathe, he was very talented and they are real works of art.

Following their move from their family homes in Wiltshire, Eric and his wife Mavis have always lived in Burgess Hill with their two daughters, Tracey and Julie, who live locally and now have families of their own.

Our sympathies go out to Mavis and family.
